Taking a Closer Look at the UMN’s Sustainability Coalition
Do you find that living sustainably as a student isn’t always the easiest thing to do? When it comes to being eco-friendly, do you feel as though accessibility to leading a low-waste life isn’t always there? Whether it’s classes, jobs, clubs or even social lives, the business of college can stand in the way of living environmentally sustainable.
One organization at the University of Minnesota is aimed to change that. The Sustainability Network Coalition, or SNC, is a collection of 12 groups on the Twin Cities campus that are all aimed at environmental sustainability. According to their Facebook group, they are, “a platform to enhance visibility and coordination among sustainability-focused student groups at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.”

The 12 groups involved are:
Environmental Student Association
Gophers for the Boundary Waters
Health Students for a Healthy Climate
Minnesota Public Interest Research Group
Plant and Microbial Biology Club
Voices for Environmental Justice
Along with connecting and collaborating with these groups throughout the University’s campus, SNC also hosts various events for students not already involved in the coalition to get involved in. Events have a wide range, from networking events to gatherings designed for the sustainability community enthusiasts.
One of these gatherings included a second-annual river cleanup, hosted in September 2018, in an effort to clean the Mississippi River. The event started with an educational brief and group bike ride, followed by a two-hour pollution cleanup along the river in Boom Island Park. For the past two years, the SNC has provided this cleanup opportunity for student environment enthusiasts.
Through campus involvement and collaboration, the SNC provides an outlet for students looking to make the environment, and world, a better place.
