Perk Up Your Ears: A Quick Guide to Twin Cities Record Stores
One might think that in the age of digital streaming, the music industry would be shifting away from dusty old records and cheap cassette tapes. In actuality, vinyl and cassette sales are seeing a surge, thanks in part due to their reliability and collectibility. After all, as the recent MySpace debacle has proven, who knows when a digital database will disappear forever?
Below are five (of many!) great record stores in the Twin Cities where you can get your start on your physical collection.
Electric Fetus
There’s probably a city ordinance somewhere that requires me to mention the Fetus when talking about record stores. This store offers all sorts of music, and also sells quirky gifts towards the entrance. If you’re just visiting the area, the 50-year-old store is a must-visit based on its reputation alone. City residents will find no trouble feeling at home, however.
Address: 2000 Fourth Ave. S., Minneapolis
Dead Media
Those aren’t employees ringing you up, they are volunteers! Dead Media boasts an extensive cassette collection for those on a budget, and being in close proximity to Birchwood Cafe and Matt’s Bar means this store is perfect for stopping by during a full day out in the city.
Address: 3330 E. 25th St., Minneapolis
Agharta Records
Just down the road from the University lies Agharta, a newer record store with a large metal and hip-hop collection. Check out the newest records, or head to the back for used records on the cheap.
Address: 2512 University Ave. W., St. Paul
Roadrunner Records
This St. Paul shop might not have the most room, but it is packed to the brim with all sorts of LPs and CDs. From folk to jazz to rock (and even a small section for comics), Roadrunner has a lot to offer in its small space.
Address: 4304 Nicollet Ave., Minneapolis
Hymie’s Vintage Records
With a homey feel and a large collection to pick from, Hymie’s offers great music while going easy on your wallet. This vinyl-only shop specializes in albums released before 1980, giving it a classic used-store feel. Pick through the various genres on hand or take a seat at one of their booths.
Address: 3820 E. Lake St., Minneapolis
Of course, this list does not even begin to address the countless options a record buyer has in the Twin Cities. Take a look at the map to find the best store for you!
